We all know that working families are having a tough time. Costs are rising and affordable housing is hard to find. It’s difficult to make ends meet, and you shouldn’t have to work two or three jobs just to make ends meet.
The Problem
Nearly a fifth of our children live in poverty.
Many here pay more than 30% of their salaries for rent; roughly half have trouble paying their rent.
Our average weekly wages are much lower than the NC average – and costs are often higher.
The federal minimum of $7.25 an hour has not been raised since 2009.

Why It Matters
Everyone should be able to afford to live here in Western North Carolina, especially working class families. Some common-sense policies to support the working class can make the difference between getting by and getting ahead.
